As Fiji spends this Mother's day in our current Covid-19 climate, we appreciate greatly a mother's presence in the home, miss those who may be away protecting our front lines, those on the other side of the border or kept away in isolation, and cherish the memories of mums who are no longer with us. They hold a soft spot in each of us because just like life itself, it is irresistible not to love or wonder at them.
Mothers have been there from our beginning (literally). They have carried us, birthed us, nurtured us, and gave us all the care, warmth, and life lessons to make us better for our tomorrow. If there was a penny for each time a mother delivered a prayer for us, we’re sure she would deny herself that immeasurable sum and bank it for us.
When we think of a mother, we think of a woman that held the fort steady for months and years while a father was away serving his country. The woman that would try and give the best to her children. Despite not having enough to place a kid's costume order like other parents, she would browse through material shops for hours to find the same material or one that was close and take it home to sew; so her child could have a dance costume like everyone else.
She would discipline her children in the strictest way to keep them at bay because she knows the value of having a good character. A hardworking businesswoman who despite the stereotype and stigma when pursuing her dreams, stuck by her goals, and kept striving for her family and children. A determined go-getter with limited education who gained her experience on the job and still made it.
A woman of substance and endless faith in her God. She did not care if the world judged her, her family and those she considered close were her priorities – the rest did not matter. A woman with a great sense of humor and the life of any party. A mentor with so much zeal and inspiration to draw from. She is not afraid to speak her mind even if she is criticized for it, what matters to her is having a voice and having it heard.
They say that behind every successful man and happy family is an incredibly strong woman. She is the foundation of any household and an epitome of courage, empathy, sacrifice, and love.
“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.” Proverbs 31, 10-12
